The Vampire: What (If Anything) Comes Next?
The modern vampire has had a remarkably long and varied history. Since stories of vampiric activity began to emerge out of Eastern Europe in the seventeenth century, the vampire has had a near-continuous cultural presence. Vampires have persisted, in part, by being adaptable: the bloated, ruddy undead of the seventeenth-century village bear almost no resemblance to the pale, glamorous vampires of the contemporary world.

This panel will consider both why the vampire has endured and what its future might be. Can the vampire really live forever? How are vampires changing to reflect new cultural concerns and preoccupations? Why are vampires particularly popular in some historical periods? What might cause them to surge in popularity once again? Topics will include the vampire in YA literature, the science fiction vampire, and the hybrid vampire.

Pandemic Survival Tournament
Pandemic Survival is an “extreme” version of Pandemic where teams of two will face each other in an epic battle to save the world. Their goal: to be the first team to find all four cures, or to be the last team still alive at the end of the game.

In this tournament-style version of the game, all teams will face the same problems: their player cards will all be placed in the same order before the game; the infected cities are the same for everyone; the Epidemics strike at the same time for all teams; every team has the same role cards. The only difference is the decisions they will make! Their strategic choices will lead each team in different directions, and one strategy will pay off in the end and lead to victory.

To preregister for this tournament, please email Gaming@hal-con.com. Please include your name and your teamate's name. If you don't have a teammate, you can register solo and we will try our best to pair you up with another player.

A Semiotic Analysis of Lara Croft: Exploring Three Generations of the Tomb Raider Video Games
This panel is about Lara Croft and the changes she went through during the three generations of Tomb Raider. I just finished my undergrad and this project was my semester-long seminar paper. The title for the paper is “A Semiotic Analysis of Lara Croft: Exploring Three Generations of the Tomb Raider Video Games”. Obviously this is a very academic-based paper, but the presentation I would present would have everything in lay language, and I would include more fun information about the Tomb Raider Games and less dry academic theory.

The Abstract for the paper: This research conducts a semiotics analysis of Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider series using Roland Barthes’s Myth to better understand gender representations in video games. The data for this study uses the 11 games from the Tomb Raider series on the PC platform—Lara Croft’s original form. This study finds that the narrative of women in video games has changed over a 20-year period and shows that Lara Croft is socially constructed to look feminine, but act masculine.

Note: This panel is PG-13

Intro to Legend of the Five Rings
Join me for an introductory demo of The Legend of the Five Rings RPG! (4th edition)L5R is set in the eastern medieval fantasy world of Rokugan, boasting a very rich history and cultural background (think feudal Japan meets Game of Thrones). Play as a samurai from one of many unique clans, each with their own ideologies, traditions, and combat styles. Choose from a Bushi (warrior), Courtier (diplomat), Shugenja (mage), Duelist, or Monk. Combat plays a lesser part than the more traditional “dungeon-crawl”, with a focus instead on world immersion, social interaction, moral dilemmas, and political intrigue. Concepts such as Bushido (the Samurai Code of Honor) and spiritualism play an important role as well. When fighting does break out however, it is quite intense and lethal.Come check it out!

The Ins and Outs of Outlander: It’s More than Haggis
A honeymoon for the ages: World War 2 nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall has more coming to her than she ever could have imagined when she sets out to collect some flowers in the spring of 1945. When an innocuous-looking set of standing stones whisks her 200 years into the past, she suddenly finds herself immersed in a rebellion - and an arranged marriage. Diana Gabaldon’s series of eight books – and now a popular TV series – have sold 25 million copies and have been translated into 34 languages. What is the appeal? Time travel? Military history? The strong female characters? Men in kilts? Gratuitous sex? The multi-genre nature – what is Outlander anyway? – science fiction, historical fiction, adventure, romance – or all of the above?!This panel will discuss these questions, as well as what draws fans to the story, our favourite (and least favourite) characters in the novel and on the screen, the Jacobite rebellion, the portrayal of role of women in history and in the novels, the challenges of screen adaptation, or whatever your Gaelic heart desires. If you’re new to the books or the show: Ceud mìle fàilte! BYOK (Bring your own Kilt).

Haidong Gumdo is a Korean style of Swordsmanship. It was developed for fighting multiple opponents on a large scale battle setting and for one-on-one combat with the sword.  We are pleased to be providing you with a slice of what we do;

  • Kibon Donjak – Basic stances and cutting techniques
  • Gum-bup (Sword Law) – Sword forms, connecting the basic techniques into the myriad combinations that can occur on the battlefield
  • Beigi – Cutting:  paper cutting used to perfect control and accuracy and precision with the blade
  • Mock sparring – to showcase application of the techniques

Learning Haidong Gumdo is a great way to sharpen your body, mind and spirit.

Please feel free to contact us or drop into the dojang:
